Today marks my mama’s 44th birthday. Every year I try my best to make mama a birthday cake. I’ve gotten pretty creative in the past years from shaping cake into the number 40 as well as putting 40 candles on it, literally. This year I didn’t put 44 candles at least. 😂
I decided to have a go at making a semi-professional cake. You know, like the ones you see cake decoraters make. Like how I’ve had someone make my children’s themed birthday cakes in the past.
This year I’ve decided I wanted to figure out how to actually make multiple tiered cakes, homemade buttercream icing, fondant, and all that other stuff that I’m going to find out about. I’ve put a lot of research into this. From cake pan sizes to different recipes of different types of icings.
Mama’s birthday cake was my first official try. It was a challenge. It was fun. This was the test run.
It was a whole lot of messy.
But it turned out pretty epic.
So I used the 8″ X 2″ round pan and the 6″ X 2″ round pan. I began this process Friday night, February 18th. Yes I used boxes of cake mix. It took me one box of mix to fill both of those. So in total it was two boxes of chocolate cake mix that I used. This way each layer was about 4″ in total.
Whilst the little pans of cake were baking, I made a batch of fondant. I found the recipe here: http://www.wilton.com/rolled-marshmallow-fondant/WLRECIP-242.html#start=8
Once the fondant was done and all the cakes were baked, cooled down, evened out, and wrapped in plastic wrap to go into the refrigerator, I was done for that night.
Now the second night, on Sunday, February 19th, I made the homemade buttercream frosting. I found the recipe on the Wilton cake decorating website as well.
You can find it here: http://www.wilton.com/buttercream-frosting/WLRECIP-41.html#start=3
I put a layer of frosting in the middle, on the top, and around the sides. This was the fondant could stick to the cake.
Let me know what you think!
Do you think I have any hope for this to continue to improve?
I sure hope so. I plan on making my son’s 3-year-old birthday cake this upcoming March. He loves Octonauts so it’s going to be an Octonauts cake.
Maybe my second attempt will go even better.
I’m a very hands-on learner. So it’s bound to get better. 😊
